Eleisia, Thanks for sharing your thoughts...

Superior is the correct word for me and the point I'm making. Complimenting an employee to make them feel needed often ends with a sub-par employee doing less. Pumping an employee up to make them feel superior will encourage them to go above and beyond what they thought they were capable of. They do better for themselves and for the business and ultimately you, the Entrepreneur.

I don't know if "make them feel superior" is the phrase I would use. I encourage and compliment to make employees feel needed and important.

Linda, Thanks for sharing your ideas...

The post is directed towards Entrepreneurs who are seeking to make their companies grow. I have found that helping employees achieve a sense of superiority in their work gives them a unique drive to go beyond what they believed they are capable of. They do a better job, are more enjoyable to be around and aren't difficult to manage.

I would rather have a team that feels superior in their job then a team that needs appreciation.

Liz, Thanks for expressing a difference of opinion. I agree that many people don't like to be put in the spotlight, but I also believe that everyone likes to have a feeling on superior knowledge so that they have a sense of personal value.

That gives them the opportunity to demonstrate their self-worth while helping others succeed.

I understand being called on in class. I hated it. The teachers would do it when they knew I was not paying attention. It was a gotcha moment. That didn't help.

I wonder what it would have been like if they would have focused on calling on me when they knew I had the answer? I know I would have worked harder to pay attention 1) because I knew I would be called on in class and 2) because I could demonstrate my knowledge and gain respect from my peers (which I didn't have when I was growing up).

You are right Patrick. Most people concentrate on the opposite. Unfortunately, from time to time I catch myself and bring myself back.

There are situations where the reverse works. Ironically, it's usually with highly skilled management types that are seeking structure and rank.

I believe through experience that it is always better to appreciate people rather than to make them feel superior. To my way of thinking, putting someone in the spotlight by appreciating them is a much better approach.

I do agree, however, with your comments about employees who can break you. That's why it is so important to manage your people as a team and stay connected with them. Appreciate them and they will make you succeed.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I couldn't disagree more. I don't think most people enjoy the spotlight. I think hyper-extroverts and self-absorbed people enjoy being the center of attention but that is not most people. One of the hardest things I experienced as a teacher was getting students to speak up. I had to call on students because they disliked being in the spotlight so much. They didn't want to be singled out.

I also don't think one's goal should be to make people feel superior. I'd rather befriend people, make them feel like equals and appreciate them for who they are and what their talents are. Having self-confidence and being empowered to take action is not the same as feeling superior (that is, arrogance).
